I must have been living under a rock because I was previously unaware of Lewis' quest before I started this trilogy. My introduction was when my sister, a judge for the Benjamin Franklin awards the year Dark Waters won, handed it to me and said, "You have to read this!" Current readers are fortunate in that they can buy all three books at the same time, which you really should do to fully appreciate the eloquence of the series. A beautiful and engaging writer, Lewis allows us to join him on this 13 year odyssey, introducing us to fascinating characters, providing access to The Seed Buried Deep and finally, with this volume, bringing us To The Brink right along with him. Particularly in book 3, we experience the absolute best and worst of humanity. Along with Lewis and his supporters, I was moved and relieved when he finally completed his journey but must admit to experiencing an impending sense of loss as I just didn't want it all to end. Lewis opens himself up and we know him so well at the end that we can fully appreciate how difficult his transition back is likely to be. Just as the actual expedition changed the lives of many, so are readers profoundly impacted by the tenacious and resolute Lewis, his relationships, the reminders of the threats to global sustainability and the importance of living simply and mindfully. Thank you Jason, for telling the story in your own voice and with such complete honesty.
