Madeira wines from the nineteenth and even the eighteenth centuries still retain an ethereal, youthful gloss. Once the cork is removed, the wine comes to no harm, even if the bottle is left open and on ullage for months on end. If ever there was a wine to take to a desert island, this is it. Although Madeira was only discovered in the fifteenth century, the island and the wine trade have a long and involved history. After a short historical introduction Madeira: The Island and its Wines rounds on the present: the physical character of the archipelago, the state of the vines and vineyards and the way in which the wines are made. A guide to the current producers(shippers) follows along with a detailed appraisal of their range of wines. There is also a chapter for collectors of older wines, many from shippers that no longer exist but whose names live on in bottles of wine that are still found in cellars all over the world. Wines dating as far back as the eighteenth century are featured in the book, along with quality appraisals.Madeira is without doubt one of the most difficult wines to describe but it is certainly the most uplifting. There is a short section on the language of tasting madeira as well as information on buying, keeping and serving the wines. The book concludes with a travel guide for anyone visiting the islands.This unique book on the island and its wines explains what it is that makes Madeira so special.

At this time of writing, The Mobi Madeira: The islands and their wines has garnered 8 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Mobi is Good TO READ!

The book presents the approximate 300 year history of madeira wines.right up until 2015 when the book was written. It describes the families involved in the growing, making and shipping of this glorious wine and also the trends in grape varieties used to make the wines over several centuries. I am no expert of Madeira wines, so I wont make any comments regarding the accuracy of the technical information presented in the book, however i liked the author's personal style of writing.However I do have a few comments to make as to why I did not "love" the book ie not give it a 5/5 rating. I will list 4 areas of concern. Firstly I found the content of the book a bit unbalanced with nearly 100 pages of the approximate 250 page book dedicated to tasting notes of very old wines seldom if at all seen outside the USA, the UK and Europe ie not particularly relevant to readers outside these areas. Secondly the book contains a quite a number of typos and errors which I would have thought a decent editor would have picked up but in this case the author is on the editorial board of the "Classic Wine Library" so perhaps not. An example of an error is on page 30 when the author describes the soils as having a naturally high pH (they are actually low pH) which is said to contribute to the high natural acidity of madeira wine. This was an ideal opportunity to discuss the relation between soil and Madeira wine, but the opportunity was missed - read John Szabo's book on Volcanic Wines (2016) for a better understanding. Thirdly the author refers extensively to place names throughout the text, however there is only one rather inadequate map of Madeira which fails to show many of these places. As a result I was left wondering as to exactly where some of the described places were. Fourthly, whilst the glossary of terms at the rear of the book was very helpful, there were a number of omissions. For example,the tasting term "salgadinho" was used on a number of occasions but who knows what it means? The glossary did not help!
